How to Build a ClickUp AI Agent Using Claude

Updated: Feb 19

Have you seen ClickUp's AI agent feature?! They really just changed the game.

I'm still learning myself, but as a certified ClickUp expert, I wanted to share what I've figured out so far in case you're looking to set up agents in your own workspace.

First things first, don't create an agent until you have an idea of what you need it to do. I was in a deep strategy session with Claude, and then asked it to generate a scope for me to help manage and keep up with all of the action items and next steps from our session. It did just that!

What I Built

I used this method to create a revenue and business development agent I named Captain. It keeps me on task with my priorities, checks in with me on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, follows up on the status of things, and helps make sure I'm keeping that work a part of my daily practices.

Your agent will look completely different based on your needs. Maybe you need one for client onboarding, project delivery, content planning, or team coordination. You can still follow this setup process, just customize your scope.

Set Up An Agent in 4 Easy Steps

Here's a quick rundown of what to do to get your agent set up today.

  • Step 1: The Strategy Session Before you touch ClickUp, you need clarity. This phase helps you figure out what you need and where an agent would make the biggest impact. I included prompts in the guide to support this step.

  • Step 2: Scope the Agent Take the scope you created with Claude and define the agent's name, mission, responsibilities, communication style, boundaries, and success metrics.

  • Step 3: Build/Assign the ClickUp Space Your agent needs a workspace to track and update tasks. If you give your agent list permissions, it can build the board for you.

  • Step 4: Test it! As soon as the agent is created, you can run test prompts and make adjustments as needed. As you use it, you may find more things to add or change.

What You'll Need

  • A Claude account (free or Pro) - Claude is the AI you'll use to work through the prompts. The free tier works, but Pro ($20/month) gives you more room if you're going through all 5 phases in one sitting. Sign up at claude.ai.

  • ClickUp with Brain AI ($5/member/month) - Your ClickUp plan needs the Brain AI add-on to create and run Super Agents. This gives you access to Super Agents, AI Automations, and 1,500 AI Super Credits per user per month.

  • I also recommend watching ClickUp's overview of what AI agents are before you start so you understand what's possible.

I put together a free downloadable guide with copy-and-paste Claude prompts for every phase, step-by-step screenshots of how to set up your agent in ClickUp, and tips I learned from building my own.
